Spring is here, and its time to rev up the grill for that Memorial Day BBQ! Wine is a great way to wet your whistle while entertaining in the backyard, but what to choose with so many tastes coming off the barbie? Here are some guidelines and suggestions of interesting wines that will impress the crowd without breaking the bank.

Kilikanoon Watervale Riesling

Watervale, Australia 

An intensely floral bouquet, opens to an elegant fine palate with green apples and crisp acidic citrus. Delicous with cajun shrimp, grilled fruits and vegetables.


Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

Alois Lageder Pinot Bianco

Piedmont, Italy

A refreshing, light-bodied wine with notes of sweet white florals, ripe orchard peaches and apples. Balanced acidity leads to a mouth watering finish. Pairs with spicy bbq pork.

Beaujolais, France

Light, complex red, with lots of red fruit, savory anise, cocoa, and mint. Soft tannins and good acidity, pairs great with grilled sausages, and barbecued chicken breast!

Mendoza, Argentina

Rich with luscious raspberry and macerated currant, Mendoza Malbec has dark, juicy finish. This wine is vivid and racy in character. Pairs great with a grilled lamb!

Sweet black currants, spices, violets, asphalt and grilled herbs all take shape in this mid-weight, yet luscious red.The bold body of red meat combined with the charcoal flavors bridge to the wine’s oak and tannin.

Thunevin Calvet Cuvee Constance

Roussillion Villages, France

A 50/50 blend of grenache and carignan with nice intensity and a big, sweet bouquet of creme de cassis, black cherry liqueur, licorice. Pairs nicely with grilled beef tenderloin.

Quick Tip: When grilling with sauces, let the sauce, marinade, salsa or chutney decide which wine you choose to drink with dinner. For a traditional grilled fish dish white is a great choice but if you add cajun seasoning or a spicy salsa red wine might complement better. Try a dry red zinfandel with your next spicy marinade.
Have a Laugh: Grape Stomping SnaffuHere’s an oldie but goodie from 2006 that still brings giggle fits. Of course, we feel bad for the reporter, but it after seven years it is still really hard not to laugh.
