Best Night of Wine… Wine & Spirits Top 100

October 17, 2014

Whenever someone new learns what I do their response is often the same; “Oh, wow, sounds like a really tough job…”

Does the life of an associate pulisher at Wine & Spirits Magazine suck? No, not particularly, though it isn’t entirely a walk in the park either. The folks who get clobbered are our wine critics and tasting staff. Over the last twelve months our staff has opened, tasted, and re-tasted more than 14,000 bottles of wine from more than 18 countries. That’s a lot of juice to sit through and it’s not easy on the palate. It takes a wealth of knowledge about regions, varieties, soil types and stylistic variances to be a Wine & Spirits critic. That’s probably why there are only six of them in the world.

At Wine & Spirits Magazine, we publish eight issues a year; six bi-monthly issues (our bread and butter), a special Fall issue, and then our Annual Buying Guide released in October. Or as I like to call it, our big behemoth Winter book.

The six periodicals are where we report on the wines we’ve tasted, specifically the ones our critics have scored and reviewed. Each of these issues showcases roughly 700 new wines for our readers to discover. To assemble our Annual Buying Guide we sort through all of these recommended wines and determine which wine producers stood well above the rest — The Top 100 Wineries of the Year

In order to be named a Winery of the Year a producer must have at least three strong wine recommendations from the past 12 months. This narrows down the possibilities drastically. Next we take the average score of the recommended wines and compare them to their counterparts in the same country and region. Then we look at the number of wines we tasted from each producer and compare it to the number of wines we recommended.

We profile the 100 wineries with the best performances of 2014 in our Annual Buying Guide and invite them to be a part of our Top 100 Tasting, an annual event in San Francisco. It’s a magical mid-October evening when these 100 wineries come and pour their top scoring wines for more than 600 guests.

This year, for our 11th Annual Top 100 Tasting, we’ve partnered with DRYNC to offer all of you the chance to purchase these extraordinary wines. We can’t release all 100 wines until the night of the event, but click here for a sneak peek of 20 wines we’ll be tasting.

We hope that you’ll join us for the tasting itself, on Tuesday, October 21st at CityView at METREON in San Francisco.

Use promo code: DRYNC2014 to get $20 off your ticket!

Even if you can’t make it to the tasting, we invite you to take a sneak-peek look at some of the wines being featured; you’ll find twenty listed below. And, we invite you to see the complete line up of Top 100 Wineries and the wines that earned them the award on your DRYNC app starting Wednesday, Oct. 22nd.

I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy them. I know our critics did and they taste A LOT of wine.

Cheers!
