Drync is now live at the App Store!

November 17th, 2008  |  19 Comments

Well, it’s been months and months of work, testing, more work, more… testing, and we’re now live in the app store! We couldn’t be more excited.  We have a lot of great ideas for upcoming version, and are eager to find out how you would make Drync better.  So, let us know by giving us some comment love.

Check out Drync

I don’t like the fact that the Virtual Wine cellar info is only stored on your server. I certainly want access to my inventory (~700 bottles) even when I don’t have an internet connection. With iPhones having 8/16 GB, there’s plenty of memory, so local storage could easily be offered as an option in addition or as an alternative to server storage.

  • pbrosen

Hi Michael – that’s a fair point. For v1.0 we chose to store the cellar on the server for a number of reasons. The way this will work in the not too distant future is that we plan to synchronize your local cellar on the device with the server. Having it on the server is important 1) as a backup of your data, and 2) so that we may compare (anonymously) your wines/ratings to other users to make recommendations down the road.

Thanks for the input. Please keep it coming, as we’re constantly adding new features based on feedback.

Love the brandy, er, I mean branding! who did your logo work? ;-) Great interface, simple design. Will I be able to share with people on Facebook, or some other ways other than email? Love that fact that I can show up at a party with a wine that people will enjoy, without having to ask anyone at the booze store!

    Hi,
I just purchased the app and I like it!
Found a wine expected to be quite rare.
The one found however is a vintage 2002, while I am drinking a 2006 bottle.
Now I want to have it in my cellar and rank it, and my feature request is to being able to change the vintage of the stored wine.

I just bought your app based on the 5 stars but despite the great reviews for a $5 price I am really disappointed so far. There is such a lack of helpful info, i.e. no user guide (either in the app itself or the website) and no support link to ask specific questions. In particular I am confused about the wine label feature. The website shows screenshots of the cellar with wine labels included yet I can find no way to include a photo of the label in the app itself nor any info on how to do this or if this is a future feature, etc. I will likely post a negative review of Drync Wine at the AppStore for this reason.

  • Andreas

I like the features, however I’m kind of disappointed with the search results. I have a lot of wines from South America and Spain. Many don’t show, or the listing is incorrect.
The search takes long and there is no possibility to ad wines that don’t show up in the search. there should also be a function to trnsfer your notes to the cellar.
Sorry guys, but this needs still a lot of work – but that is only my opinion. I think I will be stuck with cor.kz for a while, which I don’t like.

    Frank,
Thanks for your comments – good, bad, they’re all very helpful. I’m sorry you’re disappointed with the app so far. We tried very hard to fit every feature we thought would be useful into our app, but, at the end of the day we had to cut some for our first version.

One of these, unfortunately, was replacing the label with a photo from your iPhone. This will be a part of the next version, which we’re hoping will be available in December.

Again, I’m sorry you’re disappointed. I hope our next version solves some of the issues you are experiencing!

    Andreas –

Thanks for purchasing the app. I’m surprised to hear that you’re not finding most of your wines. We’re now searching over 800,000 wines from a variety of sources.

That said, we agree that you should be able to add your notes to the cellar and will add that feature soon. Since it needs to be very clean and easy to understand (which wines are notes and which are ‘matched’), we didn’t want to throw it out there quickly.

Last, please expect search to get significantly faster in the next 3 weeks. We have made a dramatic change to the way we do search that will impact search times.

    Thanks for your patience.

Tried to find drync at the Apple Store. Did a search on “drync” — got no results.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi

Generally quite a good app, but have some important bits to recommend for improvement, after trying out for less than a day…

Noticed that as as entries in Cellar increase, the earlier entries start disappearing. Appears to hold only about 20 entries? Was in the process of updating hundreds of entries…

Assuming that the Cellar can hold more entries, there isn’t a search function within the Cellar. Will need to scroll through the entries, which are listed in accordance with the timing of data entry…

These are important bits for me personally.

    Thanks.

Hi, I just have a question. I was thinking of getting the app, but am unable to tell from the demo and screen shots if you can search your virtual cellar “I Own” list by varietal or type (red, white, sparkling, or dessert). With the app I have now, I can look at my vitual cellar and view only reds if I want, or pull up just my dessert wines, etc. Please advise.

    Thanks,
    Susan.

  • eric

    Hi Susan,
Right now you cannot sort or filter by anything other than own/want/drank. This is in our short list for version 2 which we hope will drop in December and will be a free update from the app store.

  • Blake Austin

I was trying to find a good app to start cataloging my cellar. I was excited to find your app and bought it. Unfortunately your description of the app is not true. I wanted to take my own label photos. you are not being truthful about this app. You need to change the description to reflect this. I finally found in you blog were you will be adding this feature you say. I bought this app because of the feature you described. I am going to give you a negative feedback because of the miss leading information.

  • eric

Blake, Thanks for your feedback — we’re sorry about the confusion. We added “upcoming features” to our description in the app store because we noticed a lot of other apps were doing it and we thought it would be helpful to would-be purchasers to make an informed decision.

Unfortunately, you’re not the first person to have read it wrong (that would person would be me.) As a result of your feedback, we just changed the description to be more obvious that these are upcoming features. Those changes should go live in the next few days.

The good news is we’re adding the photo feature in next release which we hope will drop in December.

    Hello,

I just bought your app (and also cor.kz :) -both apps are just a start. I would like to add my notes via an API to my homepage (www.einfreun.de) – will this be possible? And I would also like to get/backup my notes from your server …

    kind regards
    Sven

I wish this would be compatible with ipod touch 1st generation. Is there going to be an update that will allow Drync to work with the 1st generation touches?

  • eric

    Hi Phil,
Boy, you’re right. We messed up. There’s no reason it shouldn’t work on a 1st generation iPod Touch.

Seems we hit the wrong checkbox when we submitted the app to the store. When we submit our next version in December we’ll be sure to click the right button and include your iPod, too.

  • Derek Falconer

Just bought the app. Super cool. One suggestion. Is there anyway you guys can roll into the next update a feature that lets you see other people’s reviews. Almost like an online database of user reviews for wines. The reviews that get pulled up now are nice but they are very similar to the descriptions on the back of the wine bottles (lots of fluffy language and not so useful for determining whether or not a wine is any good). I’m sure you guys are already working on sometihng like this but thought I’d throw it out there.

    Again great app, thanks guys

    Derek

    Hi,
I just bought your app and tried it for a day. While I like the way it looks, I am disappointed that I cannot make new entries for wines that don’t appear in your search. My collection consists primarily of BC wines, many of which are small wineries or new wineries that don’t appear in the search. I would like to be able to include them in the list of wines I own or drank. Also, would you be able to add the option of entering the price of a wine? I would like to be able to note the price in the list of wines I want. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
